The ruined capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, with concentric walls, carved stone gateways and scattered temple sculpture.
History
Orugallu (Warangal) became the Kakatiya capital in the 13th century. Construction of the fort is associated with Ganapati Deva and was continued by Rani Rudrama Devi. The fort fell to the Delhi Sultanate in the early 14th century.
Architecture
The fort has concentric rings of earth and stone walls. At its centre are the four ornamental stone gateways known as the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, surrounded by remains of the Swayambhu Shiva temple and many sculpted panels.
Cultural significance
The fort is the symbolic heart of Orugallu and of the United Warangal identity.
